What actually happens in a Japanese Head Spa

A Japanese Head Spa is one of those treatments people book because a friend told them about it, then struggle to picture. It is not a hair appointment and it is not a facial. It sits somewhere of its own — a treatment focused on the scalp rather than the hair, with a lot of time given to how it feels.

Here is what actually happens from the moment you sit down, and how to work out which of the three options suits you.

  • Hair is dried and finished before you leave

It starts with your scalp, not a menu

Every Head Spa begins with a short consultation and a look at your scalp. Your therapist is checking simple, visible things — whether the scalp looks oily or dry, whether there is product build-up, whether it feels tight or sensitive. That conversation decides which products and which scalp-care steps get used on the day.

If you want to see what they are seeing, Scalp Analysis with Microscope is a +£25 upgrade. The images come up on screen and you look at them together. It is a cosmetic assessment, not a medical diagnosis — if something looks like it needs a doctor, we say so.

The cleanse is the part people remember

The warm-water scalp cleanse is the heart of the treatment. Water runs over the scalp while the therapist works through it slowly, section by section. This is the part clients describe afterwards as the reason they rebooked.

It is also where the ASMR-like quality comes from — the water sounds, the brushing, the unhurried pace. A lot of people book a Head Spa as much for switching off as for scalp care, and there is nothing wrong with that being the main reason.

Massage, then targeted care

Head, neck and shoulders follow. Pressure is adjusted to you — say if you want more or less, because most people do not and then wish they had.

After the massage comes the targeted scalp care: a serum or mask chosen for what your scalp needed on the day. In the Deluxe this step is longer and uses a premium serum and mask.

How the three options differ

The Japanese Head Spa is the core ritual — 60 minutes, £99 introductory and £145 standard. It covers cleansing, the head, neck and shoulder massage, and standard targeted scalp care.

The Deluxe Japanese Head Spa runs 1 hour 20 minutes at £139 introductory and £185 standard. The cleansing ritual is extended, the massage is longer, and the scalp-care step uses a premium serum and mask.

The Duo / Couples Japanese Head Spa is two treatments side by side, 60 minutes, £199 introductory and £249 standard. Book one appointment and give both names. It is a common choice for couples, friends, sisters and mother-and-daughter visits.

You leave with dry hair

Hair is dried and finished simply at the end — you are not walking out wet. Bring a hair tie if you would rather put it up afterwards.

Many clients settle into a rhythm of every four to six weeks. Your therapist will suggest something after seeing your scalp, rather than selling you a course on the first visit.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions

No. The focus is the scalp rather than the hair. It combines a warm-water cleanse, a head, neck and shoulder massage and targeted scalp care in one unhurried session, and it finishes with a simple hair dry.

The Japanese Head Spa if this is your first one. The Deluxe adds an extended cleansing ritual, a longer massage and premium serum and mask steps, and suits people who already know they want the longer version.

Yes. Products and scalp-care steps are chosen for your hair and scalp on the day.
